The Inspiration: As a 9-year-old in 1853, Thomas Hiram Holding traveled across the American prairies in a 1,200-mile wagon train with his family. This experience of "living under canvas" stayed with him for life. After returning to the UK and becoming a tailor, Holding combined his love for the outdoors with the new "safety bicycle." He designed lightweight, portable camping gear that could be carried on a bike. A revolutionary idea at the time. In 1901, he founded the Association of Cycle Campers (now the Camping and Caravanning Club). He later wrote The Camper's Handbook in 1908, which codified the activity as a hobby for the masses rather than just a necessity for soldiers or explorers.
