By stripping away all known gases from an air sample, they isolated a small, unreactive residue. While Henry Cavendish had actually encountered this "unreactive bubble" in 1785, he failed to identify it as a new element.
Argon is a noble gas that makes up about 0.93% of the Earth's atmosphere. Its name comes from the Greek word argos, meaning "lazy" or "inactive," because it is extremely stable and rarely reacts with other substances.
