History: Before the 18th century, most people cooked over open hearths. The Castrol Stove (1735): was invented by the architect Francois de Cuvillies, this was the first design to completely enclose the fire. The Franklin Stove (1741): Benjamin Franklin famously invented a metal-lined fireplace intended to heat homes more efficiently. While it was primarily for heating, it paved the way for the all-metal cooking ranges that followed.
