Healthcare gas, more commonly known as medical gas, refers to specialized gases used in hospitals and clinics for patient treatment, anesthesia, and diagnostic purposes. These are classified as medicinal products and must meet strict purity and safety standards. What is Healthcare Gas? Medical gases are essential for life support and surgical procedures. The most common types include: Medical Oxygen: Used for patients with respiratory issues or during surgery. Nitrous Oxide: Known as "laughing gas," it is used as an anesthetic and analgesic. Medical Air: Used primarily in respiratory therapy and to drive surgical tools. Entonox: A specific 50/50 mixture of Oxygen and Nitrous Oxide used for rapid pain relief (common in ambulances and maternity wards).
History: The "invention" of healthcare gas was a series of discoveries by different scientists over several centuries: Oxygen (1774): Discovered independently by Joseph Priestley (who called it dephlogisticated air) and Carl Wilhelm Scheele. Priestley is often credited with the discovery because he published his findings first. Nitrous Oxide (1772): Also discovered by Joseph Priestley. However, its medical potential wasn't realized until Humphry Davy began experimenting with its effects in 1799, noting its ability to relieve pain. First Medical Use (1790s): Thomas Beddoes established the "Pneumatic Institution" in Bristol, where he used these newly discovered gases to treat respiratory diseases, marking the birth of modern inhalation therapy. Anesthesia Breakthrough (1844): Dentist Horace Wells was the first to use Nitrous Oxide for a tooth extraction, proving its practical use in surgery.
