Argon is the industry standard for shielding gas in TIG and MIG welding. It forms an atmospheric "blanket" that displaces oxygen and nitrogen, preventing weld contamination and brittle joints.
History: In 1894, physicist Lord Rayleigh and chemist Sir William Ramsay officially discovered Argon after Rayleigh noticed a density discrepancy: nitrogen extracted from the air was heavier than nitrogen produced in a lab. By stripping away all known gases from an air sample, they isolated a small, unreactive residue. While Henry Cavendish had actually encountered this "unreactive bubble" in 1785, he failed to identify it as a new element.
