MMA welding, also known as Manual Metal Arc welding, Stick welding, or Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), is a manual welding process where an electric arc is created between a coated metal electrode and the workpiece to be welded. The arc melts both the electrode and the workpiece, creating a molten pool of metal that cools and solidifies, forming a weld.
MMA welding, also known as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) or stick welding, was first introduced in 1888 by Russian inventor Nikolay Slavyanov and is credited with the initial concept of using a consumable electrode.
However American inventor Charles L. Coffin patented the process in 1890, further developing the use of metal electrodes in arc welding.
