Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding is an arc welding process that uses a continuous solid wire electrode heated and fed into the weld pool from a welding gun. The two base materials are melted together forming a join.
The principles of MIG Welding History began to be developed around the turn of the 19th century, with Humphry Davy's discovery of the electric arc in 1800.which paved the way for the later development of MIG welding. MIG welding was not patented until 1949 in the USA. Specifically, it was patented for welding aluminum.
H.M. Hobart and P.K. Devers are also credited with inventing the MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding process, with their work in the 1930s.
